                    Fishing in the Paschal Mystery

Repent, and believe in the Gospel or Arrepientete y cree en el Evangelio. We will all hear one of these two phrases when we receive ashes at the beginning of Lent. All Christians are called to special prayer, fasting and alms giving (caring for the poor) in the season of Lent. Each person determines how he or she will personally live out these ancient Lenten exercises. In addition to personal Lenten practices, Catholics are also called to a communal practice of self-denial through fasting and abstinence.

The instruction in the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar #27 tell us “Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian Initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance.” How can we as a parish become more aware of our Catechumens and Candidates? Do we know them? Talk to them? Welcome them into our community?

40>3<50 is a simple memory device I use to teach about the journey of the Lenten Season through the Triduum and into the Easter Season. The forty days of Lent are like a “>” funnel or a chute guiding the entire Church to the mystery of “The Triduum” also called The Three Days of the Paschua. The Triduum “<”opens like a horn or Easter Lily into the fifty days of Easter celebration that culminate at Pentecost. Mark your calendars to make attending our Lent, Triduum and Easter liturgies a priority as an annual retreat for your spiritual journey.

I am Joseph your brother! Fr. Joe Hannappel
